Do you know the ancient remark "thrice move or once burn"? It refers to the losses from moving and leaving things behind. Sometimes one just can't have it all, and all things come to an end.

So, many of my old slides were committed to the pyre, the part of the enormous archive that has lost color and any recoverable quality.

And while I did the final selecting, each and every frame triggered the memories recorded; performed its primary duty; once again and for the last time.

Some necessary things are sad, and some sad things are necessary.

It is a painful lose. Some look at a photograph and say "oh that's nice", but to you it means something. This is an amazing shot the colors and detail are awesome creating an beautiful photograph.

Thanks,I'm sure you understand what it's like. We can only show so much, from all that's been remembered.
For "material memories" which always succumb to Time, the rule applies; stating "If you keep things long enough, you can throw them away!" ;)

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was made by the firespot we had on the Archery Range in Zagreb (Croatia). There were many purposes involving fire; cleansing, warming, barbecue, repairs etc. Anyway, what's an outdoor site with no fireplace?

Time

Probably a Sunday afternoon, hard to say. The Exif got lost in the post-processing so I'm guessing, based on my archery training routine from those days - and it was quite some time ago...

Lighting

There's the fire, of course, and also Daylight. The camera made a nice mix of color temperature there, but I also changed some of that in post process.

Equipment

The camera used for this shot was an Olympus superzoom SP570UZ, with aperture of f/4.4, ISO 80, exposed with 1/200th of a sec. The focal length (equiv.) was 39.82mm

Inspiration

As I said in the photo description, I was preparing to move and had to get rid of lots of ballast, especially the kind we take for normal and invisible when we are firmly settled in one location. So I shared the more impersonal things, but for the immense archive of slides there was no better way to deal with. OK, so maybe there was some other way, but it was not an option for me at the time. You know the saying, "if you keep stuff long enough, you can throw it away" - and it is painfully correct. Needless to say, the occasion was inspirative enough to deserve a memory of its own.

Editing

For decades, my main go-to editing (set of) tool(s) has been Corel Suite, and I used it (v.X3) to complete the image sense with this image. The final result was then touched up with rather routine stuff, like lifting some local shadows and balancing the overall color. I am sorry to add that, since Windows 10, my Corel programs would not work any more - and the new Suite is way over my finances nowadays! So, after many years I have lost one exceptional graphic set of tools to what is called "progress". I think the Win10 should have been made to accept some quality older programs. But no-one cares what I think, so... :)

In my camera bag

I find it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip, while my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. Recently I include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The vest also has large-lens pockets that contain a small water bottle, sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. There is about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. My smartphone comes along too. It has yet another spare camera, but more importantly the Spirit Level App to make the phone a perfectly horizontal surface under the camera. This is essential for panoramic sweeps. The app is free, and requires no extra permissions whatsoever. The large back pocket of the vest is reserved for a lightweight rain poncho. If the weather suddenly plays up, the poncho neatly covers all. Using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way, so that's all I need to make photos.

Feedback

I believe there are (or there should be) emotions that precede every click we make. Some emotions are positive, other less so. Some are based on the beauties we encounter, the others may be triggered by our negative reactions. Whatever the emotions, we use them to base our experiences on, and so form our visual expressions as well. Same here: burning all my film-based images was not an easy task, but then, I have them all in my memory - so the actual damage can be discussed from various platforms. One notable difference points intensely at photography, though: whatever you have photographed you can also share - and we know of no more complete information transfer than imaging. So take photos - of anything, at any time, in any place. And use any medium available.
