Behind The Lens

Location

This it the face of Sheridan Glacier in Cordova, Alaska. Cordova is an amazing place with many glaciers that can be seen from beautiful hiking trails. It is the only place where I've been that I can hike from a rain forest right on to a glacier. We had a black bear shadow us for a while during the hike to this location (our dog companion a large black lab . . .affectionately known as bear bait when hiking in AK . . . chased the critter away).

Time

This particular visit was during the late fall when daylight hours were short, at about Noon.

Lighting

This time of year in Alaska (October) one can get great low angle lighting about anytime there is daylight.

Equipment

Nikon D5100 with a 300mm lens.

Inspiration

This was my first opportunity to hike at and on a glacier, there were only three of us hiking, and the scene was so beautiful and serene, it had to be taken. On another visit, later, to this same spot, after sitting and meditating for about 30 minutes I called back to my place of employment and told them I was never coming home! (Changed my mind later, but it is that kind of place).

Editing

Slight color enhancement to enhance the blue tint of the ice done in Picassa.

In my camera bag

Camera, three lenses, 18-55, 70-300, and 150-600mm along with spare batteries and SD cards, couple of filters and a macro extension tube.

Feedback

Be prepared to move your body to where it image is, dress warm and carry bear spray!
