Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio Nothing too exciting, just playing around with some things I had on hand.

Time

This image was taken within the super late hours. There was no daylight. It was one of those nights where I couldn't sleep and had to take my creativity out.

Lighting

For this image I used a simple softbox attached to a speedlight. Granted it was a little overbearing to put in front of a small rose and ring, but with it I was able to pull it back a bit and create this nice covering of light over everything.

Equipment

Simple stuff. I went with my Nikon D7000 with a 105 f/2 Macro lens. Freehand, no tripod. Nikon SB900 with an easy softbox attached. And that was practically it.

Inspiration

I wanted to portray a sense of time with this image. This is why I used a dried rose, rather than a live one. It's almost this...sword in the stone effect. That love and meaning lasts for all time, even when things pass and wither away. There was some deep inner meaning behind this rather than just a ring in a flower.

Editing

I did NOT do any post processing with this image, which was weird for me because I usually do. This image came straight out of camera as is.

In my camera bag

That depends really...If I'm traveling, I keep it simple...Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, and Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR II. In my full bag, I have an assortment of lenses additional to the ones above, which would be the 105 f/2 macro, 28-120 f/3.5-5.6, and a 70-300 f/3.5.-5.6. I also keep a second D7000 body. A few cheap speedlights, a light modifier or two, and all the cables involved.

Feedback

Any advice? Yes...Play...play play play. Play with the things you have around you. In a macro sense, the smallest objects may have the greatest effect. In addition, place some meaning behind your pictures. Tell a story. We are storytellers first. There is a reason why the phrase goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words"
