Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in the desert of Rub Al Khali. It is also called 'The Empty quarter', the biggest uninhabited desert. The desert covers a part of Saudi, Yemen & UAE.

Time

The location of this image is around 300 km from where i stay in Dubai. I had gone there to take some light trails and milky way shot and while scouting for the setup spot i saw these dunes. The light was perfect, it was around 7 in the evening and i was in the right place at the right time.

Lighting

I was struggling with the location for this shot, as i was planning for some milky way shoots. I wasn't getting the right light as it was summers and when the sun was up, there was a lot of harsh light reflecting from the sand. This shot was taken just moments before it went dark.

Equipment

I used Canon 650 with a Sigma 50-200 mm lense on it. Was fixed on a manfrotto tripod with a remote release.

Inspiration

I always had this place in my bucket list as it is the most secluded place in UAE. After the sunset, there was no other light source than what i carried with me. This shot happened while looking out for a vantage point for some star trails. I went there with a few of my friends and camped out in the desert for that night.

Editing

I have been shooting in RAW for a long time and generally landscape shoots require a bit of post processing work. However, As the lighting and mood was already perfect, it didn't require much editing. Just adjusted the white's and blacks. Fixed the horizon and cropped a bit.

In my camera bag

Discussing the details of what we carry in our bag is a photographer's favorite topic. I carry a National Geographic Backpack NG 5160. Its an amazing sturdy bag and i highly recommend grabbing one. I have Canon 650D, which is getting old now and i am about to add 5D to my collection very soon. It has a battery grip which holds 2 batteries at a time, which really helps in taking the wildlife bursts and star trails as the power lasts forever. Although i recommend using authentic batteries only. I have a few lense on me but my favorite is Sigma 150-500 DG. Its an amazing telephoto with great autofocus speed. It has a Neoprene cover for weather proofing. Apart from that i carry, Canon 18-55, Canon 50 mm f1.4, Sigma 50-200 and Canon 70-300. In addition to the kit I have a few accessories, Lense cleaner, Dust blower, Screw Driver set, cloth, extra battery, Charger, Gorilla Pod. I also carry a Dairy and a pencil to note any specific location ot camera settings.

Feedback

If anyone is trying to get a sunset shot in desert, Make sure to always carry enough water with you to keep hydrated. Scout your location and look for a vantage point with the best lighting situation. Make sure that before you take the shot, Image it in your head and always keep the background/foreground of your subject. In this case, Had there been any electricity wiring or a patch of road or someone walking by, you wouldn't be satisfied after taking the shot. Be aware of the surroundings of where you are standing and where the subject is. Make sure that someone in family or friend is aware of the remote location you are planning to go. Ans finally, more important than the shot is to always have fun while doing it. An adventure is in a true sense only if you are enjoying it. Have fun.
