Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during my first trip to Sri Lank. We visited Bundala Wildlife Sanctuary which is a protected site known for many bird species.

Time

It was close to noon time

Lighting

Since it was almost noon time the light was harsh but I managed to get a moment when the a passing cloud improved the light. I chose a perspective that would get me a green background to make the image more appealing.

Equipment

I used a Canon 500mm f4L IS II mounted on a Canon 5D Mark III. The shot was taken handheld.

Inspiration

This was my first sighting of this bird species and therefore I was excited to take a good closeup shot. Lucky to get the image against a nice background too.

Editing

Only minor corrections to exposure, contrast, white balance and saturation done in Photoshop. Also slight denoise using Topaz plugin in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D Mark III Sony A6000 Canon EF 500mm F4L IS II Canon 70-200mm F2.8L Canon EF 24-105mm Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro Tokina 16-28mm 2.8 Canon 1.4x III Canon 2x III

Feedback

In wildlife photography we need to study the behavior of the bird or animal in order to get the best photos. Other factors are using high quality lens and camera to capture highly detailed images. Finaly a lot of patience is required for wildlife photography.
