Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my natural light studio. I purchased an older home and renovated it and turned it into a natural light studio.

Time

This shot was taken around 5pm. The window to camera left is west facing so I was getting direct sunlight through the window. I pulled one of the sheer curtains infant if the window to act as a light diffuser.

Lighting

I really wanted to accomplish some deep blacks. I wanted to neutralize the ambient lighting so I used the direct sunlight so I could increase my shutter speed to decrease the existing light. As you can see by the image, my F-stop was at 1.4, and I wanted to keep it through to pull my viewers focus to her eye. So the only option to decrease the ambient light was to increase my shutter speed.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II using the Canon 50mm 1.4.

Inspiration

99% of my work is children portraiture, and I'm always trying to find ways to show the Childs personality. This little girl was incredibly interested with the world around her, and less interested in me, so I decided to use this to my advantage.

Editing

Almost all of my post processing is done in LR CC. I have a few presets that are my favorite. I mostly use the tone curve to achieve the look I want. I applied a slight S curve to the RGB Channel and then went into each color channel and applied S curves there to achieve the dark shadows and the color grade I wanted.

In my camera bag

Since I'm a children/family photographer the first and foremost thing in my bag is fruit snacks. I never leave anywhere with out them. As far as camera gear goes, I primarily use a Canon 5D Mark III. When I first started shooting I used the Canon 24-105mm f4. Lately I've fallen in love with the simplicity of prime lens and the narrow F-stop they can deliver. I ALWAYS have some form of a 50mm prime in my bag. Occasionally for my outdoor shoots I will bring out my 70-200mm f2.8 USM II. For lighting I have a Canon 600EX-RT Speedlite with the Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Trasnmitter. I attach my Speedlite to a Wescott 26" Rapidbox.

Feedback

Photographing children can be hard. Every kid has a different story to tell. There is a difference in capturing what the kid looks like, and who the kid is. Always push the the later I always push myself to try to capture who the kid is. With Children's portraiture, you need to learn to roll with the punches and make the best of any situation.
