Having recently moved to the wild south of new Zealand, I was still getting to know the landscape. The Mataura River, rises in the Eyre Mountains of Southland and flows into the Souther Ocean. At Firelight it is a broad glacial river with a wide gravel bed criss-crossed by braided streams. In the summer of my first year I was shocked when the river appeared to disappear altogether. Little did i know that a large part of the river's flow is beneath the gravel bed. I was convinced and outraged that the water was being diverted for farming or some other use because I knew it was flowing further upstream. In response I shot this composite image with many umbrellas.
