Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just outside the town of Banff, Alberta on a cold winter morning.

Time

I took this photo on a cold winter morning.

Lighting

To create the dramatic skies, I under exposed slightly as to not blow highlights. Having the snow on the ground allowed me to recover the shadows pretty easily.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D, Canon 17-40L and a Manfrotto 190XB tripod with ball head.

Inspiration

I always wanted to capture a sunstar for sunrise. I waited until the sun was positioned perfectly to capture this photograph. I love the warm tones of sunrise with a cold crisp tones of winter.

Editing

I did the usual highlight and shadow recovery. I also removed some elk prints from the snow that were distracting.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon 5DM3, 16-35L, 70-200L F4, and my NiSi and Lee filters along with my Induro tripod and ball head. I shoot strictly landscapes.

Feedback

Having a good lens that will help create a sunstar is important in shots like these.
