Wonderful.

Behind The Lens

Location
Buccaneer Beach - Bowser BC Canada
Time
Late afternoon at low tide
Lighting
Every day with the eagles is unique. The lighting can change in a matter of minutes from bright sunlight to cloudy. This day was later in the afternoon but not so bright to capture the sun going down. It was in May so the days are longer and lighter
Equipment
When I am taking eagle shots I find it very hard to use a tripod because you don't know if you are going to look ahead, above or behind at any given moment. With that in mind I do something that a lot of photographers cringe at and that is hand hold my 150-500 lens. I would in the future like to get a monopod with a gimbal on it for the flexibility but also have the stability that a tripod or monopod supplies. The other equipment was a Nikon 7100 and because I don't have the time to continually change settings I have set it on Aperture.
Inspiration
Every year there is a fish that comes in from over 600 feet down called the Midshipmen to lay its eggs under large rocks. The fish looks like a bullhead if you are aware with that one. Like I said it goes under very large rocks to lay eggs and then the male fish stays with the eggs. The eagles just wait their chance for the midshipmen to come out and then he grabs him for dinner. It is so amazing to see the patience these birds have and yet when it is time the speed and skill they use to capture their prey. I usually spend a few hours down on the beach just watching and sometimes seeing how close I can get to them without disturbing them.
Editing
I did some cropping and a little light adjustment and that was all.
In my camera bag
I carry two cameras with me at all times. I have just moved up to a Nikon D750 (full frame) camera with a 24-120 FX lens. I also have my Nikon 7100 and that has my 70-200 2.8 lens on it. When shooting things like eagles or sea lions I use my 150-500 Sigma but I don't always carry that with me as it is just too big.
Feedback
The key thing to getting just the right eagle shot is patience. They conserve energy and wait for just the right moment and we need to do the same. They are an amazing bird just because they aren't looking at you or reacting to your presence know they are fully aware you are there. When I take any wildlife I always respect their space but I will take a photo as soon as I see it, wait, take 5 steps ( not sure why I picked 5 but I did) take another, wait, take 5 steps and so on. I follow this procedure for all wildlife. I am very cautious to not crowd them as they are wild animals and deserve respect. We are in their territory they aren't in ours.
