Isn't this a North American journalist? Has he been incarcerated, taken hostage somewhere? His image is recognizable.

Expressive. Moody. Dark Lighting. Mono. This is nothing but perfect.

Location
This shot was taken in a block of highrise multi storey social housing flats, just a ten minute walk from Belfast City Centre.Time
This was taken at around 2pm in the afternoon. Not a good time normally to be taking photographs but because of the location it was still suitable as the bright light from outside spills onto the models face in contrast to the shadow inside where he is located. This shows up every texture, line and hair on his face.Lighting
This was shot using natural light. Taken in a chute room that has metal grills exposing the surrounding social housing estate. Light shining onto the tenants face in contrast to the shadows insideEquipment
Using only natural light I used a tripod to stead myself as from memory this was shot at 1/30.Inspiration
The photography is titled 'Counting Days'. Taken behind the grill whilst the tenant is looking outside. For me this gives the impression of imprisonment and loneliness. With a shallow depth of field creating bokeh on the grills adding to the loss and lonely feeling of the image.Editing
Brightness and contrast, with sharpening. In my camera bag
My bag is full of Lee Filters as most of my work is landscapes and seascapes. 17-85mm and 50mm lens.Feedback
Well with this shot in particular I had it in my head almost exactly how I wanted it to look, right down to the models mouth being opened slightly. If you go into a shoot knowing what you want to achieve beforehand then I think the results will be better. Communicate with your model and maybe take ten minutes or so to have a chat with them about what you are trying to acheive.
