Behind The Lens

Location

It's taken at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin - 10 feet away, just behind me. Looking into what would have been East Germany.

Time

It was a rainy day in Berlin. This was taken mid-afternoon, just as we came back onto the street at Checkpoint Charlie - after another mini-downpour.

Lighting

I was fascinated by the movement of light in the puddles further up the street - particularly in the top right of the image. I wanted to capture the feel of these and that sense of movement, so I used a polarizing filter to enhance this.

Equipment

Taken on a Minolta, 35mm film. Polarizing filter.

Inspiration

I saw the power of the image when the friend I was traveling with stepped into the puddle. As he put his foot into the puddle I saw the shot, and said 'wow - wait a minute...' That's why you can only see the ripple effect of the foot, toward the lower edges of the puddle

Editing

Nada. As shot.

In my camera bag

I was carry a polarizing filter as I'm fascinated by reflections. I've found they allow me to manipulate the image in the moment be it a reflection in glass, water or something else. I'll look through the lens and rotate the polarizer until I get the optimum feel of what drew me to take the shot in the first place. Other than that I carry a mini-tripod and an external flashgun - they both help me to manipulate light for optimum effect.

Feedback

It's all about what you see. I like to have a camera and set-up that allows me to take shots in an instant. They feel less-staged and it's more joyous that way. You really are capturing a moment, as close to possible, as you see it.
