This photo was taken on South Beach in Miami just before the last Mercedes-Benz International Fashion Week Swim.Time
This photo was taken about 15 minutes before sunrise at first light when the pre-dawn sun was still kissing the clouds with lightLighting
The subject here is a beautiful model and dancer with an amazing range and flexibility. We have worked together before capturing her style and great form and we wanted to create an image where the dancing took center stage, which is how we decided on silhouette. The fact that we were both in Miami for fashion week made choosing a location easto.Equipment
This photo was captured with a Nikon D800 a Nikkor 16-35 f/4 and no flash.Inspiration
We just wanted to take a really great and powerful dance photo where the grace and poise of the movement really takes center stage. It is kind of like she's dancing through the clouds.Editing
This photos was fine tuned in Adobe Lightroom. Simple contrast adjustments to really deepen the black and bring the most detail out of the photo. In my camera bag
I've upgraded my gear bag since this photo was taken. Now I carry a Nikon D810 and usually 3 lenses. The Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8, the 24-70 f/2.8 and the wide angle 16-35 f/4. I also keep my SB-900 flash and an SB-700 as well as my Sekonic light meter.Feedback
The way to do silhouettes is to have a background that is more than a few stops lighter than whatever your subject is going to be. Sunrise to the east and Sunset to the west work well for this. Sunsets are usually warmer in tone with more blazing colors so for this shot, the softer and more elegant light of sunrise was our choice. It's best to get up early and get in location at least 20 minutes before the sun is scheduled to rise so that you can practice timing and lock down your exposure. After that it's just a matter of waiting for the sky to look the way you want and then snapping until you either get the shot or the sun comes up.
