Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at the lawn of National Botanical research Institute, Lucknow, where I work as chief photographer.Time
It was 9.00 AM of March 13 2014Lighting
Angular Morning is always considered best for photography, It gives perfect molding and dimensions. This wasn't an exception from this context.Equipment
I used Canon 5D Mark III with EF 100mm 2.8L Macro Lens. No tripod or flash were used.Inspiration
Tiny purple flower with small twigs of yellow at the top was the first thing I noticed and sunlight coming from behind the translucent yellow glow at the tips as well as glowing purple leafs caught my attention first to click it.Subject was at the ground level so I had to lie down to get the angle I wanted to get the perfect glow against dark natural backdrop of distant bushes. Everything looked fine pictorially but still I felt something is missing, So I sprayed water on it to create droplets and yes instantly it was alive, the freshness and life could be felt now. Shiny gleaming drops added the pleasant attraction I was looking into it.Editing
Yes definitely post processing if involved in all my Photographs as shoot on RAW. Color enhancement, sharpening, dodging/burning is done. However I try to keep it at the minimum so that it looks natural and not over done.In my camera bag
I usually carry Canon 5D Mark III Camera body and EF 100mm 2.8L Macro, EF 17-40 F4L zoom, EF 70-300mm 4-5.6 zoom Lenses, Polarizing + ND Filters, couple of Memory cards and one fully charged spare Battery. If on long photographic tour then Data cable, Tripod, Battery Charger also I carry along.Feedback
Any body who is interested in Macro or close up photography should essentially have a good quality "Macro Lens" but these lenses are very expensive so beginners or students might find it difficult to afford. My advice to such people is... They can use their 50mm lens or 28-55mm Lens set at 50mm and hold it by reversing it from camera body and holding it close the the lens bayonet mount closely with one hand and shoot he picture. This becomes very cumbersome in positioning yourself as well as one hand gets engaged, to avoid this one can purchase Lens Reversal Ring from their native camera shop compatible for your Lens Filter Mount. Lens reversal rings are also safe to prevent light leakage falling on sensor. There is no use of carrying artificial back drops unless you have a helper with you as mostly I am alone while doing photography I keep the things minimum but it is always help full if you keep some silver foils which can easily be wrapped around any thing nearby to give fill in or create catch light. Harsh or direct sunlight is not suitable for flower photography because it eliminates the softness and details of the subject. Overcast day or shade is better or you can use white cloth over the direct light to soften it. Advanced users carry Ring flash, Extension Tubes, Macro Lens.
