Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the brink of the horseshoe falls, in Niagara Falls Ontario. I already had the location in mind when I went there that morning, because I have been there many times before. This helped is using the light from sunrise to my advantage.

Time

This photo is a special one to me. It was taken on the morning of my 30th birthday. It was a cold day in march, and while most people who have their birthdays off tend to sleep in, I woke up earlier to catch sunrise at Niagara falls. Sunrise is the start of a new day, but this particular sunrise was the start of a new decade of opportunities for me. It was taken March 6th 2015 at 8:09AM.

Lighting

The sunrise couldn't have been more perfect that day. There was a mysterious fog over the falls, and the way the sun came through the clouds made it very interesting. It was almost like I was in a whole other world for a while, and the mist was drawing me in.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Nikon D90, 18-55mm kit lens @ 38mm, F4.5, ISO 200 and a 10 second exposure. The camera was mounted on a tripod and I was using an ND filter.

Inspiration

Niagara Falls has always been a favourite place of mine to take pictures. It is very photogenic at any time of day, and I usually find myself there doing night time photography. I wanted to change it up and takes some pictures at the start of the day instead. I couldn't think of a more perfect way to start off my birthday!

Editing

I did some adjusting to the highlights, and contrast in this photo. I also brought down the darkness a bit, to give it that perfect effect. It was cold, and after 30 minutes outside my fingers were beginning to freeze, making it harder to adjust the setting on my camera, so I left it up to post-processing. The adjustments I made were to make it look like I remembered seeing it with my eyes. There was also minor cropping.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D90, my 18-55mm lens, and my 70-300mm lens. If I remember I, pack my 28-80mm macro lens aswell. I make sure I always have my remote and ND filter with me, just in case I want to do some long exposure photography.

Feedback

Be true to yourself as a photographer. Find a subject that speaks to you, and run with it. It doesn't matter if the subject has been photographed a million times before . Everyone sees things in a different perspective, and will add their own creativity to it. Just have fun with it!
