Behind The Lens

Location
This was the final stop on my 3-day road trip across the Utah and Arizona deserts. I'm pretty sure Horseshoe Bend was the right place to end my trip.
Time
I arrived an hour before sunset started. It was important I find a good spot. Unfortunately, a few dozen photographers were already present so I was worried my options would be limited. I searched for a "mid point" which would provide a good composition. When I found the "v" shape rocks, I knew it would frame the photo perfectly.
Lighting
It was extremely dusty so I decided to use a gradient neutral density filter to protect my lens. The filter worked great because it diffused the sun rays a bit and darkened the sky so your eyes are more attracted to the center of the frame.
Equipment
Sony A7S, Zeiss 16-35mm 4.0, and a cheap tripod from Amazon (it would have been easier with something sturdy that could withhold the wind).
Inspiration
Horseshoe Bend is no secret. Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of photos are taken here every year. The beautiful thing about photography is every day can offer different possibilities and there's always a new way to capture the same thing from a different perspective.
Editing
Most of the processing was to sharpen some of the edges and bring out the highlights of the sun.
In my camera bag
Aside from my A7S and Zeiss 16-35, I carry around the Zeiss 50mm 1.8 and Sony 70-200. I might be missing a few gaps in my lens offering, but it covers 99% of situations I encounter. Unfortunately Sony/Zeiss gear is some of the most expensive.
Feedback
Find a spot, take a road trip, and chase your dreams. Don't try to copy what others have already taken, try to put your own spin on the shot and create something new and original. In my case, I wanted the boat centered in the frame, which I think is my way of creating original content.
