Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of my little son at a place called Ceaser's Camp. All my shoots take place in a natural location to reflect the feel of my work.

Time

My little Franks and I love an adventure together, we used to head out in the evenings when it was just the two of us. Now he has a little brother and I'd about to start school I love looking back on our photos and the pure freedom we got the chance the have. When there was no bedtime !

Lighting

This photo was taken in October/ autumn time. It was super cloudy, a bit of a moody looking day. I really think it suits this image though.

Equipment

I used my old nikon d5000 here and an 85mm lens. I don't think it's always so much about the equipment. I've had so many comments like 'how have you managed to get these images with that?! - referring to a DX camera

Inspiration

He's my son. I take a million photos a day! I lost all my images and videos of him from day 1 to over a year old so I guess I'm making up for it ? And I try to take 'big camera' photos at least once a month. They change ridiculously quickly and mobile phone pics don't always cut it on the details you don't ever want to forget.

Editing

I can't remember the exact presets I used. But I typically edit in light room with a few subtle presets and push up the exposure and contrast and make the skin a bit more silky for a dreamy finish.

In my camera bag

I don't actually have a bag! I keep meaning to get one but for now I just carry my nikon d610 with the 35mm 1.4 sigma art lens constantly attached. I want to invest in a 50mm 1.2 and a Macro lens but I'm happy for now.

Feedback

I love a natural look and feel to my images... so I'd say go somewhere with your subjects surrounded by nature and where or with who they feel most comfortable, stand back and watch them be them. I sometimes give gentle guidance but that's more so when I get older kids that look to me for instructions and adults until they warm up a little.
