Very early one July morning (8:55 am) in fact, I have found that in all of my years of going to the Phoenix Zoo even though it is hot in the summer months in Phoenix, I get to the Zoo when it opens for members at 6:00 am and the photo opportunities are amazing.Lighting
I shot this through a fence at the Zoo, and all I kept telling myself was "This is such an amazing bird, I wonder if people even know that it is here at the Phoenix Zoo?" I wanted to showcase how beautiful this small Owl was to me.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 40d 100-400 lens, handheld.Inspiration
I saw this little Owl looking at me with those big eyes behind a fence. I wanted others to see this bird, as I did without the fence that blocked his beauty.Editing
I do not like to do much to my photos as far as post-processing is concerned. However, for this one, I felt that I needed some help to eliminate the presence of a fence/cage. I shot wide-open to aid in this but still had to clone out some of the fence lines and adj. brightness and contrast. I worked on this photo on and off for about a week.In my camera bag

Go to the Zoo as early as you can when the animals are awake, make the most of it, and look for animals that are not your typical Zoo animals.
