Location
Harrison Lake in British Columbia, Canada.Time
After sunset while there was still a little bit of light in the sky, around 9:45pm.Lighting
The sun had just set but the sky was still light enough for me to use f/8 at 30 seconds. However, the light was only lighting the sky and distant mountains. I wanted to get some detail and color in the foreground but in the initial shots the rocks were silhouetted, so I grabbed my flash light and painted the rocks and foreground water with light during the 30 second exposure. This is why you are able to see the rocks in the clear water.Equipment
Nikon D600 with a Samyang 14mm f/2.8, a Sirui T-2005X tripod, and a camp flashlight for light painting.Inspiration
A beautiful lake at sunset. I was taking photos of sunset but not really happy with the results I was getting, so I kept shooting. It took a number of tries to get the light painting the way I wanted it but I kept at it till I got a fairly even light on the rocks and foreground water.Editing
I did some minor tweaks in lightroom and photoshop, not a lot of major processing was needed for this one, just brought out the shadows a bit more and enhanced the colors. In my camera bag
I typically shoot with a Nikon D600. For night shots like this I exclusively use my Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens. I also carry the following lenses: Nikon 24-85mm, Nikon 70-300mm, Tokina 17-35mm f/4Feedback
Play with different sources of light. This was the first time I tried using a flashlight too light the foreground, it took at least half a dozen tries before I figured out how to balance the ambient light with the artificial light from the flashlight. I was out camping and had time so I just kept trying while enjoying the wilderness and finally got this image.
