This one is outstanding to me. The softness is perfect for the photo. And the little girl is adorable.

Location
This photo was taken in my snowy, winter New Hampshire, USA backyard. I'm always looking for a good backdrop where ever I go. Sometimes the simplest things can create the neatest effects! For this picture the woods were in the background along with lots of snow.Time
This was taken during mid-day. Any time of the day can be good if you get enough good exposure and compensate for harsh shadows by finding filtered light or good reflection.Lighting
This cloudy, over cast sky was perfect to create soft lighting on her face. The white snow and sky acted as a huge reflector to even out shadows and give her eyes good catch lights.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon PowerShot S1 IS. Hand held.Inspiration
Capturing childhood and/or expressions of people is rewarding and I felt this furry coat framed the softness of youth perfectly and was elegant but also playful and fun with the bright red against the snowy backdrop.Editing
I blurred the background to hide lots of footprints in the snow as not to detract from the subject. I also smoothed the skin with soft blur.In my camera bag
Like many others suggest, a camera is no good if you aren't using it. I started with this Canon PowerShot S1 IS and received many compliments for how soft my photos were. It was a 3.2 mega pixel camera! For the past several years I have been using a Nikon D3300 with a Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8G fixed lens. This picture is proof that it doesn't matter what camera you have. Get out there and use whatever camera you can get your hands on to capture things that please you and hone your photography, composition and editing skills as you do so. The more practice, the better you will get!Feedback
I like to let the person take the lead when I capture the different facets of their personality through facial expressions and body language while we talk and they interact with their environment. I would use a low aperture setting to get the blurry background but since my camera didn't have that option, I did it with an editing program. I adore this big, beautiful world and greatly enjoy searching for all the interesting things in it to get a picture of. I photograph all kids of things! Take the picture while you can! Don't wait because the moment may be fleeting, whether it be the lighting, position or expression on someone's face as in this picture. Most of all, have fun!
