This photo was taken under the pier in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. It was my first " self taught " long exposure shot that I had ever attempted.Time
Since our winters here in Surfside Beach S. C. are very mild and the lighting is not so harsh, I was able to get this shot in the late afternoon around 4 o'clock in the month of January using a Neutral Density filter. Placing myself under the pier also helped with the long exposure shot.Lighting
Lighting is everything in photography. To much light and your photos will be over exposed loosing details in your image. To little light and you wind up with an under exposed shot. Since the afternoon light was still quite strong I chose to use my Neutral Density 8 filter which combined with a 4 second shutter speed let in the right amount of light.Equipment
This was taken with a Nikon d3100 on a tripod using a 18-55 mm wide angle lens, 4 second exposure with an aperture of F/36 and a ND8 filter. ND filters are a must have when taking long exposure shots of water.Inspiration
When I began my interest in photography the long exposure water shots were always the ones that drew in my attention. They were always so dreamy and soothing. When you see a photo that catches your interest, study the photo, search the internet for similar photos, read up on how the photo was taken learning about the, exposure, lighting, shutter speed and anything else that can help you achieve the shot for yourself.Editing
Post processing this image was minimal. I photographed the image in Raw and then raised the saturation up a bit and sharpened the photo just a bit.In my camera bag
My Nikon d3100 had been my only camera for many years and has served me well. I also have my 70-300mm Fx lens with me at all times and it stays on my camera 90 per cent of the time. It comes in handy for all those close up shots of birds I love to take. Also I carry my 18-55mm wide angle lens for those landscape shots. A must have for any photographer, is my 35mm and 50mm prime which comes in handy for any portrait shots I might want to take.Feedback
Long exposure shots can be very rewarding. Whether it is a photo of smooth water or those slow moving clouds that stretch out across your photo. Picking early morning or later in the day for these types of shots is a must, as you want your exposure to be right. Also pick a slow shutter speed. Adding your Neutral Density filter is a must, as you will be able to get the effect you desire.
