Behind The Lens

Location
From the grassy pier at Cypress Island Preserve, Louisiana. Not even 20 minutes from Lafayette regional airport.
Time
Late afternoon, as the remaining storm clouds were rolling out to the north, allowing passage of the sun's rays.
Lighting
It really helped, seeing the break in the clouds and the direction the clouds were going, in respect to the setting sun. The reverse angle views were almost as spectacular and I'm glad I didn't forget to look there, as well.
Equipment
I used a tripod with my Lumix fz70
Inspiration
I've taken the same shot, different times of day, times of year, so I was actually waiting for these conditions, recognized them, and rushed out to the Lake, to get it. Cypress Island Preserve is about 10000 acres, full of wildlife and vegetation, a myriad of aerial events and always something to see.
Editing
This is a five photo stitch, originally taken over a 7 second period. Then a touch of saturation from light room and a crop.
In my camera bag
Extra batteries, storage chip. Mosquito repellant, flashlight
Feedback
Use common sense. Cypress Island Preserve is full of alligators, snakes, a rookery, seasonal hunters. Watch your safety first, get your shots and try not to impose on the residents. When you do get out there, take your shots, then picture the same scene, during golden hours, with fog, or migrating animals and annotate that on a calendar. There's always a better shot to take, just need to keep your appointment
