Location
I took this picture where the ex Erie railroad main line crosses E. 65th street in Cleveland Ohio.Time
I took this picture at around 10:00 PM while the loco CCR crew waited for the Norfolk Southern to arrive with a set of empty gondolas bound for the scrap yard.Lighting
Initially, I tried to take the picture without the bright light in the shot. But no matter how hard I tried I couldn't avoid a harsh lens flare from said light. So I figured... If you can beat it, join it. So I decided to include it in the shot and actually liked the way it turned out.Equipment
Camera was a Canon EOS T4i coupled up with the 18-55mm kit lens. I was not prepared for this shot as I did not have my tripod with me so I substituted the tripod with the rail and used my wireless remote.Inspiration
I am a railroader and a photographer by profession, so naturally I love photographing trains, and night photography is my favorite as well. So as soon as I cought wind that this train was sitting there and would be for awhile, I jumped on the opportunity to get the shot.Editing
The only post processing I did on this shot was bring some of the highlights down on the locomotive that were a little blown out at the number boards, as well as bring up some of the shadows. All processing done in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Outside of my camera, I always carry my two kit lenses. One is an 18-55 f3.5-5.6, and the other is a 55-250 f4-5.6 IS II. I also carry the Canon 50mm 1.8 lens. I try to never leave home without my Manfrotto tripod (except in this case), as well as my Canon EX600RT and ST-E3RT speedlight and transmitter.Feedback
Bring a tripod! Shoot as low of an ISO as possible and a small as possible f-stop. This shot was taken at f13 for quite a long exposer. I personly do this because I like the star effects you get with doing it that way.
