Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this in a difficult setting - a very dark house and given that this was a rescue kitten and not a client I was short on time and lighting.

Time

most likely around 10 am - indoors using natural lighting from a window. The day was overcast as well - I was not working with much in the way of lighting.

Lighting

I photograph quite a few kittens at this particular house and again because it is a rescue kitten it is usually done very quickly using only natural lighting. In this case we positioned a lime green wing chair as close to the window as possible. The color version is quite striking but I converted it to Black and White and loved the effect and the emphasis on the fuzziness and facial expression versus the color.

Equipment

I shot this with a Canon 5D mark II. I had to really stretch the ISO way up to 1600, f 4.0 and a slow shutter speed to even get the shot given the room is so dark. Luckily this particular kitten would strike a still enough pose long enough to get a few shots. I was really not wanting to get my flash out.

Inspiration

I photograph many many rescue dogs and cats on a routine basis for a grass roots organization - the Animal Adoption League in the greater Charlotte, NC/SC region.

Editing

I used Silver FX pro by Nik

In my camera bag

I keep it pretty simple. Canon 5D mark II, my 2.8 L 200mm lens & 105mm lens, a nifty fifty and a speedlight - that's about it.

Feedback

when photographing kittens - a lot of patience! I find that perching kittens or small dogs on top of furniture or other props works well for me because they are likely to be still while they are processing where they were just placed and then... the moments before they try to figure out how to get down are when they are at the most quiet and still...usually. ;)
