Location
I took this shot at Peoria Glen Oak Zoo in Peoria ,Illinois.Time
I believe it was in the mid afternoon when I took this photo and would've been shining onto the front and opposite side of the lion.Lighting
The lighting was horrible for this shot. It was backlit to some degree. I was shooting through heavy plate glass which was giving me a hazy appearance and had reflections showing up. I had to get to an area in the glass that was clear enough to shoot through. Nothing was working in my favor/Equipment
I used a Canon SX50 Powershot for this photo. Thats been my camera of choice. I did it free handed without a tripod or monopod.I leaned agaist the glass and some rock formations to steady myself. I believe I was shooting in automatic setting for this.Inspiration
I just liked the look of the male lion on the rock with that gnarly tree looming over him. The angle was good and didn't have any other obstructions in view. The big male lion just lying there looked like a scene from The Lion King and gave me the impression of him watching over a valley and protecting his domain.Editing
Yes I did, I really do very little editing to my photos except for cropping and maybe tweaking contrast or saturation. II am usually a firm believer in "taking a good picture" and not "making a good picture", but that's not the case with this shot. After I got home and reviewed my photos I found that every one of these shots was going to be a "junk photo' and discarded. They were milky and the colors were poor but I still loved the layout and composition of the shot.I decided to go to Picasa editing program and see if I could salvage one of these. I used a duo tone process and used 2 colors of orange for the sky to give the look of sunset and black for the lion to give the look of a sunlit silhouette. It worked well and eliminated all the haze and added colors to what was going to be a drab hazy photo sent to photo heaven. In my camera bag
I usually carry my Canon SX50, 2 extra batteries, charger, cords, small tripod,a small sony cybershot , plastic zip lock bags, a small underwater generic GoPro style camera and its accessories, a selfie stick that I've rigged up to hold a camera, lens cleaner cloth, A Halo rechargeable power source, SD and micro SD cards, sometimes I pack my Nikon DSLR along in it also and usually a couple granola bars.Feedback
I guess it would be to at least take a good long look and try doing something different and experiment with those junk photos and sometimes you can turn coal into diamonds and sometimes junk is just plain junk.
