Location
This photo was taken in an alleyway in Chinatown in New York City. It's about one block away from the hustle and bustle of Canal Street, and this street was completely empty when we started shooting here.Time
It was late morning, around 11am. It was cloudy so it didn't really affect the lighting, just gave it a nice even light on the stairways in the background.Lighting
I used all off-camera lighting: one flash (Nikon SB-900) on camera right with a Lastolite softbox, and on camera left a bare SB-700. They were both triggered by my Nikon D700's CLS system.Equipment
Nikon D700 with 24-70mm 2.8 lens, two off-camera flash units (SB-900 and SB-700) on light stands and a softbox on the SB-900 to diffuse the light.Inspiration
When I take dance or athletic photos, my goal is always to capture the most impressive part of the action. Levitation is always something that makes a photo stand out, because it's not humanly possible to fly. So to catch that kind of action in the air is something only a photograph can achieve. It makes you wonder: how did he get up there? The subject's outfit made that effect even bigger.Editing
Yes, general corrections in Lightroom and a some color and contrast adjustments in Photoshop. In my camera bag
Without any shoot on the schedule, I typically walk around with my Nikon D810 and a 50mm 1.4. For portraits, I usually bring my 85mm 1.4 as well as a 24-70mm 2.8, some flash units and a softbox.Feedback
Have a subject that can do amazing things mid-air, and take your light off camera!
