Location
I shot this in the back yard of the house where Daisy, the dog in the photo, lives. I feel animals are most comfortable and most themselves when they can be somewhere that's familiar to them.Time
This was late afternoon, just as golden hour was setting in.Lighting
I shot with only natural light, as I usually do. To retain the details of Daisy's fur, I kept my exposure down just a little below normal and then brightened it in post. That way I avoided blown out highlights.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5100 with a fixed 50mm 1.8 lens.Inspiration
My friend, who is Daisy's owner, commissioned me to take a portrait of her. I wanted to show her beauty, happy nature and lovely color.Editing
I brightened the image since I intentionally shot it just a little bit dark so her fur detail would remain intact. I enhanced the golden tones in the image, color toned, added a bit more backlighting and I also brought in the pink and purple flowers from another photo I shot.In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D810, my D5100, a 50 mm lens, a 27-70 lens, a telephoto lens, my flash, a remote shutter release, a flash bouncer, a foldable reflector and a variety of interesting things to shoot through like gels and translucent objects. My tripod almost always comes with me, but I carry it, it's not in my bag.Feedback
Try to make any accommodations that will make your animal subject feel most comfortable. The more at home they feel, the more personality will come through. Shooting at their home, if possible, is ideal! Even if you can't shoot at their home, try to find a location where they don't need to be leashed (but only if this can be done safely) as leashes can be distracting in images and a pain to edit out. Give them a little time to get used to you being there before you try to photograph them; either the excitement of you being there or their nervousness, depending on the animal, should have gone down some by then. Treats are always excellent in helping to guide your animal and get them to focus! Having their mom or dad there and giving them directions, such as calling the animal's name, can be invaluable. Mostly though, be patient! Animals notoriously do not take direction well, even the most well-behaved ones simply don't understand the concept of being photographed, so do your best to work with them, don't expect them to work with you.
