Behind The Lens

Location
The bald eagle is as you know the national emblem of the United States of America but also one of my favourite bird of prey . Unfortunately there's none of them, in the Uk so I like to go places where I can photograph birds of prey. I went to Banham Zoo, to photograph Sam the magnificent bald eagle and to watch the birds display. I have photographed him many times because of his captivating look and because he is a bit of a show off.
Time
The sun was shinning and Sam was on is stand. It was probably past 1pm as the bird display starting at 2pm.
Lighting
Sam had shadows under his right eye which gave me the idea to focus mainly on his left eye.
Equipment
I use my Canon 600D Focal length 135 mm 1/160s f/14 ISO100
Inspiration
My inspiration was Sam's hypnotic eyes and the lighting. Straight away I had in mind to create something strong and dramatic
Editing
I tuned the shadows higher until his right eye and background disappeared then done a close cropped and converted the image in B&W
In my camera bag
I like to have two cameras packed in my bag as sometime you do not have the time to change your lenses quick enough and miss out on what it’s far gone …. I usually use my macro lens 100mm with my Canon 750D and an 18-135mm or75-300mm lens with my Canon 600D. I also like to have all my filters, batteries, memory cards ,flash gun and my tripod
Feedback
I tend to pay a lot of attention to light and avoid shadows, unfortunately you can’t always escape them so just be creative with them. Don’t let the shadows spoil your photograph, use it to express a strong influence, an air of mystery and to create a particular mood. Remember, shadows shape the light and draw your attention to the light and integrate with the light to produce striking photographic opportunities … .
