Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Colorado Springs Balloon Classic. It is held annually at Memorial Park over Labor Day weekend.

Time

This photo was taken just after sunrise as that is the best time to launch the balloons.

Lighting

Because of the way the lake is situated your best photos of the launching are going to be from the south - southeast side of the lake with the sun at your back and to your right.

Equipment

I own an Olympus SH-50. 16MP with a 24x25-600mm zoom. It is a high end point and shoot that I normally use with a manfrotto monopod.

Inspiration

Being a self taught photographer I am always looking for that certain photo that is going to stand out from the rest, and I feel I accomplished that in the fact that you have the perfect circle when you include the reflection from the lake. Of course mother nature helped out with the calm winds on this particular day making for a beautiful reflection.

Editing

Post processing was minimal, with a bit of cropping and color enhancement.

In my camera bag

With the small size of the Olympus SH-50 I very seldom carry nothing more than a camera case with strap and a lens cleaning kit.

Feedback

With this photo it was all about the timing and angle of the shot. I was standing on a park bench which put me over the crowd which numbered in the thousands. And had to just wait it out till the balloons where lined up for the perfect reflection.
