Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of Zedd was a taken at an Electronic Dance Music Festival named Contact Music Festival at BC Place in Vancouver, BC Canada.

Time

This photo is probably one of my best photo I've taken from the music festival as well as being one of my most liked photos published by Zedd himself on his Instagram reaching over 50,000 likes. This photo was taken on Dec 28, 2014 at 12:51 AM.

Lighting

Being at a music festival with tons of well-known DJs/Producers. The production for the stage and lighting was amazing and made the stadium well lit for the photo.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon 6D with a 14mm 2.8L series lens. No other equipment used.

Inspiration

Being a DJ photographer, most DJs love to publish photos of crowd shots. I try to take multiple crowd shots from different angles to capture the sold out venue in hopes to have my work published by the artist themselves. To know that they appreciate my work and publish them on their social media is a great honour!

Editing

For DJ photography, my post-processing is pretty quick and simple as turnover needs to be quick. I usually tweak exposure, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, and clarity in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

The first thing I pack is my Canon 6D as it does an amazing job in low light situations, the next are my 3 main prime lens now, Canon 14mm 2.8L, Canon 35mm 1.4L, and Canon 85mm 1.2L Lens. Next is my Canon 580EX II Speedlite with collapsable Gary Fong diffuser. Lastly, i pack my macbook pro so that I can get a few shots to the artist to publish on their instagram/twitter on the night off.

Feedback

Usually when I'm shooting a music festival, I usually get into the zone and feel the music and the crowd. When the music starts to hype the crowd its usually the best moment to snap a crowd shot from behind the artist as that is when the crowd is the most energetic and that feeds into the DJs performance on stage. My one main advice is when you shoot at a music festival is respect the artist's space and communicate with their manager to see what restrictions are in place.
