Behind The Lens

Location
I took this photo in Babcock State Park in West Virginia. I was on a 4 day back packing trip in the Monongahela National Forest. This was my last stop before going back home.
Time
I'll never forget the day when I took this photo. It was about 10am on October 10th and it just stated to rain. It was crowded with people in the park. I waited until every one was out of my frame in the view finder. I only had enough time to take 2 shots and that was it! In the photo it looks like no one was around but there were plenty of people all over the place.
Lighting
It was a overcast day with rain but that played in my favor for fall colors. The colors just popped with saturation.
Equipment
I used a medium format film camera for this shot. A Mamiya RZ with a 90mm lens on a Gitzo tripod with a cable release. The mirror was locked up to avoid any shutter vibration and the exposure was at 2 seconds.
Inspiration
I have always wanted to come to this location. I had seen this Gristmill in a lot of publications over the years and wanted to take something a little different. I went down to the waters edge and used the rule of 3rds for this photo. It worked out the way I envisioned.
Editing
The film I used was Fuji Velvia 50 scanned in a drum scanner at high resolution. Very little post-processing, I sharpened it and used some curve adjustments and tweaked the color some.
In my camera bag
I usually carry a Canon 5D and a 50D in my bag with a 70 -200mm 2.8, my favorite lens is the 24T/S 3.5. I also have a 100mm 2.8 Macro and a 24-105mm zoom. I don't use filters much but I carry Lee's Big stopper and Little stopper neural density filters. I do use a polarizing filter at times.
Feedback
The best approach to a great photo is to be patient. Take your time to look at all the angles. Pre- scout your locations at different times of the day and year. Be sure you're familiar with your camera controls so you're ready to take a shot. Sometimes you only have seconds to take the winning photo.
