Location
This photo was taken off a main road very close to the the Horicon Wildlife Santuary in Horicon, Wisconsin. My wife and I, along with some of her family, were waiting and searching for migrating birds.Time
It was mid afternoon. The day was sunny, blue skies, and beautiful white fluffy clouds. In the distance was a dead tree against that beautiful sky. My sister in law had just purchased a 40mm clear glass ball. The scene was perfect to use this glass ball but the sun was an issue. As you know, sun light refracting through glass burns. In this case, the hands would burn as well as the very dry ground. We needed shade. My Nephew decided to open the back hatch of the minivan to provide cover, while not blocking the scene. Perfect!Lighting
There was plenty of sunshine but shade was important if this photo was going to be successful.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 70D with a Tamron 100-300mm/Macro telephoto lens, hand held. Also, my nephew held the clear glass ball and I started shooting the image displayed.Inspiration
The scene and time of day was perfect. White clouds adds the right composition to complement the landscape.Editing
The only post processing was some cropping out a lot of my nephew's hand and adjusting exposure. In my camera bag
100mm 2.8 macro lens; 85mm 1.8 lens; telephoto lens; extra camera, and fresh batteries.Feedback
Take this wherever you go. Using this clear glass ball can really capture some great attention grabbing moments. I have seen others use it for rail road tracks, beach scenes, etc. I plan to do the same very soon. You must be aware of your surroundings though because like I mentioned earlier glass and sun light produce heat and can easily start a fire on dry grass. Find shade like I did when the sun is out. Be creative!!
