Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my in-home studio. I shoot fine art nudes on a regular basis.

Time

This was taken in studio.

Lighting

I work hard to get the lighting right in camera. I like dramatic lighting that creates some sculptural forms on the lines of the body.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D and a Tamron 18-270 lens. I use Photogenic Strobes with a variety of modifiers. In this case strip soft boxes. Pocket Wizard triggers were used on all of the lights and camera.

Inspiration

I have a multi-year project focused on anonymous nudes. It is called the Nude Obscura Project. This model posed on the condition that her identity would not be shown. I have had over 30 models pose for this project over the past five years, many of whom are not professionals, but who were interested in the project and the idea of having some nude images made. The project can be seen on my flickr stream and on my website. Plans are to make it into a coffee table book at some point. The Nude Obscura Project came into being when I had a model approach me about shooting some nude images, but due to the type of work she did, her identity being shown would be problematic. So we shot the first images of the project. I then had others approach me for the same type of images and this project was born.

Editing

Post processing was completed simply with the Topaz B&W 2 filters. A bit of vignetting was the only other things done.

In my camera bag

I shoot with two camera systems. I have a Canon 7D for studio work. The Tamron 18-270 is my workhorse lens for most studio shooting. For outdoor, travel and some studio work, I use a Fujifilm XE-2. I have a variety of lenses for that camera. I carry Canon 580 II flash and use Cactus V6 triggers and a variety of soft boxes for outdoor shooting. The Cactus is a new addition and works with both cameras wirelessly (but not TTL)

Feedback

It's a bit intimidating getting into photographing nudes. It's often easiest to begin with hiring a model, possibly through a site like Model Mayhem, or working first with a spouse or girlfriend or boyfriend. It's important to be comfortable with your gear so that you can concentrate on posing and the model. I always share a lot of images with each model as well. Some are paid, many are volunteers, all get 150+ fully edited images.
