Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from our dock while living a small inland lake in Davisburg, in southeast Michigan. There are a number of beautiful lakes in this area. Offering a lot of opportunity to capture images.

Time

The image was taken on September 9, 2009 around 7:20 AM, I was sitting on our porch on the lake side of the house drinking my coffee enjoying the beautiful morning and saw the boat had come untied again. This little row boat seemed to do that a lot, not really sure why, but it did, I am not a sailor, so my knot skills are not what they needed to be I guess.

Lighting

I was not going to use this photo as the original was very under exposed, I made what you see here with opening the shadows and playing with the Lighting on the boat to bring it out as I saw it when it was shot. I used Photoshop CS 5 and Lightroom 2.0 to make the lighting adjustments. I guess it goes to show you to work with some the shots you think may not be "Keepers". The software today can do amazing things. I was going for showing detail in the boat with the contrast of the softness of the light, clouds and water. with a hint of the yellow coming form the sunrise.

Equipment

The shot was taken hand held with a Canon EOS Rebel Xti, with a Canon 17-85 MM 4.0-5.6 Lens. ISO 200 1/100 at F 4 17 MM Original Image was shot as a jpeg. This was before I started to shoot everything in RAW.

Inspiration

The boat on the calm water, the reflection and the colors of the sky and colors reflecting in the water. It says "Calm" to me. When I look at it it helps me feel at peace. I love images that offer a feeling and emotion. A picture that offers or reminds the viewer a story.

Editing

There is a lot of post processing on this shot, as previously mentioned, the original shot was under exposed so I used levels to increase the contrast on the boat against the water so I could Cut it out from the back ground. Once that was done I used Highlights and Shadows to lighten the Boat so it stood out from the water, I also used Color Efex Pro 4 to increase the detail on the boat layer. I leveled the horizon. Increased the vibrancy a little to bring out the color in the sunrise. Added little Sharping.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D, Multiple Memory cards, Canon 24-70 L MM 2.8 Zoom, Canon 17-85 4.0-5.6 MM IS Zoom, Canon 50 MM 1.4, Canon 580 Flash, 4 X 5 Piece of Welders glass that acts as a 10-12 Stop ND filter for shooting time exposures during daylight hours. Cable release for long exposures and reducing shake on long exposures and a bag of Skittles, Got to have a little snack.

Feedback

Listen to your inner voice, Shoot what you like and fill the fame with it. Get up early and plan to shoot later in the day as well, when the light is the best. Use the time between Sunrise and Sunset to scout for locations to shoot. Bracket your shoots so you have enough exposures that you can post process. Look at other photographers work to inspire you. Viewbug is a great place to do that. Follow the photographers you like and learn from them as much as possible. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
