This type of shot involves good equipment, knowing a lot about planes, angles, lighting etc., a little luck and a great eye....You've got a great eye Jim, keep up the good shooting.

Awesome shot! At first I thought it was the XP-82 that was at Oshkosh this past year.

Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken at Luke Air Force Base. They have an open house every couple of years and I always try to attend.

Time

This was taken approximately 1400hrs. The Mustangs were part of the air show.

Lighting

Lighting was Phoenix afternoon sunshine.

Equipment

Nikon D80 with a Nikon 70-300mm lens. ISO was set at 400, exposer was at 1/1500 sec at an f-stop of 5.6 and the lens set at 200mm.

Inspiration

I love all aircraft. I try to attend as many airshow in Arizona and the near states as I can find. These two pilots had obviously practiced formation flying for many hours and it was shown in this shot.

Editing

I did a simple crop of some of the skyline.

In my camera bag

Normally, I carry the D80 and a Nikon 18-70mm and 70-300mm lenses. Since this photo was taken, I have up graded my camera to a Nikon D7100 and a Tamron 16-300mm lens. This combination takes me through all the photography of aircraft from close up to action shots at distance.

Feedback

Keep it simple. Set your basics before the show,I use shutter priority, let the camera set the aperture, set the ISO to your liking. I like ISO 400 for fast moving subjects; the airshow begins and then shoot. Don't try to make changes between acts. Use the same settings and you can capture props and jets. I set the shutter for 1/90th to show prop movement and then raise it for jets.
