Location
I took this photo while camping in Cornwall. I'd been out for about 45 minutes trying to get a good landscape but not having much luck due to the sunrise being obscured by low cloud. Just as I was walking back to the tent through the wet grass the clouds parted for a short moment and I noticed beautiful soft light falling onto these little buttercups and lighting up the dew drops all around them. Of course the next thing I was doing was lying in the grass getting soaked from head to toe!Time
This was taken very early, during sunrise. It was in Spring so I think it must have been at around 5:30 am.Lighting
I was shooting straight into the sun, so it is backlit but the light was soft filtering through thin clouds. I wanted to shoot it like this so that the light would shine through the water droplets and surround the flower making it look strange and magical.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D90 with Nikkor 50 mm f/1.8 lens. A nice and simple setup!Inspiration
I had gone out with a landscape in mind but what was most beautiful and interesting about the scene on that day was tiny, and it was at my feet all along! Since that day I am always working on looking more carefully and keeping an open mind when shooting. I'm inspired by the things that are almost unseen or that are over in a moment, or even that our eyes don't really see in the way that they can through a lens.Editing
I didn't do very much post processing, I just added some contrast and saturation because backlighting usually removes a lot of contrast fro an image. The strange colours come from quite a cool white balance. In my camera bag
At the time this was shot I only owned a Nikon D90 and 50 mm prime lens so that's what went everywhere with me. But now I mostly carry my beautiful Nikon D810, Nikkor 85 mm 1.4 and Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art lenses. I'm a huge fan of using prime lenses, they make me work harder!Feedback
Shoot with your aperture wide open, and get ready to get wet! Well, maybe some better advice would be to bring something to lie on! Shoot in manual mode too so that you can get your exposure just how you want it, cameras can sometimes be tricked into underexposing an image when so much light is coming into the sensor. Finally, having a reasonably dark background really helps water droplets to stand out when the light is shining through them.
