I took this photograph in my own back yard studioTime
This was taken in April which luckily was a sunny day it is spring in the UK so can be around 14 degrees so for my volunteers to have Cold water balloons dropped on their heads was a challenge but to my surprise they didn't mind at all Time was midday in a controlled studio condition decked out with polythene to protect all the electricsLighting
I used a dummy head to practice the shot and to set up the lighting using a two elinchrom strobes set at 45 degrees either side of the model and a snoot set to the RH rear of the model with a yellow filterEquipment
the models sat on a stool which was set in a kids paddling pool to collect the water, each model had a bald skull piece to cover their natural hair line which had a protruding drawing pin set standing up to burst the balloon, My son would drop the water balloon on the willing victims head from about two feet above The camera used was Canon 6D with a 24 -105mm zoom lens set on a prepared tripod position. to get the volunteer's I offered them a fun day which they certainly had bringing their own flair to each shot with a vast collection of makeup idea's, as the day was going to be chilly I had prepared a Mexican chilli for the hungry They were friends, work colleague's and neighboursInspiration
My inspiration came from a series of shots done by Tim Tadder called water wigs however we did not have the electronic gadgets to get the timing right and it was all down to getting my timing right with the dropping of the balloons. -- some say I meant to get the girls wet by taking 5 shots before I actually got the timing right. Again I must emphasis how much fun this was as my models were quite willing to keep on going till I got my images - both old and young joined in and all have asked what we doing next :-)Editing
Very little post processing is done a couple of shots did have part of the balloon still in the picture which had to be cloned out and a little sharpening was done elsewhereIn my camera bag
My 24-105 is definitely the favoured lens but id do love the depth of field the canon 100-400 mm zoom gives. both 5D and 6D are never far away the 6D being the workhorse funny enough as I find the wireless function excellent for getting nature shots where I can set the camera up remotely Both camera's have excellent detailFeedback
Yes do it! it was fun and friends were made - it brought people out of their shell's and will certainly be repeated. Practice before the day using like I did a dummy head brought from ebay for a fiver. and then practice the shot in the studio get the lighting right - protect your equipment so when it come to actually capturing the images you can concentrate on the timing and having fun get plenty of water balloons of different sizes and shapes and experiment - use a long drawing pin and the latex skull caps from your local party store 9get plenty of these as the shy will soon want to join in when they see your images and the fun it all is stretch your imagination and hopefully this image will give you some idea's
