Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a neighbors house after we had received an early snow in Kentucky. Thought it would be a great opportunity to get the horses playing in the snow.

Time

It was relatively early, I would say around 10 in the morning. Was trying to get the images of the horses before the snow had a chance to melt.

Lighting

Lighting was great that day, and I wanted to make the most out of that opportunity. The snow was still fresh, clean looking and bright, and Iknew it would make for some remarkable images.

Equipment

I used my Nikon d3100 on this shot. I'm pretty sure I had my 50mm 1.8 G lens out. No tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I just thought the horses would be really pretty against the white newly fallen snow. Was trying to get this particular horse because he was closer and the red against the snow was amazing. He kept turning his back to me, and then this one time he turned around and looked back at me...BAM!....I knew it was now or never. I clicked the shot and got lucky. Would have liked to have been a little further back but he was not into posing that day. I was lucky to get this one shot, because he was being rather shy.

Editing

Didn't do much on post processing, I could tell it was pretty clean right out of the camera. I did clone a branch and a fallen fence post out of the pic. May have sharpened a wee bit.

In my camera bag

Normally I carry the kit lens which is 18 to 55, my 50 mm fixed lens and an 55 to 300 mm lens, Lens cleaning wipes and filters and thats about it.

Feedback

I think the more patience you have in capturing any picture in photography...the better off you will be. Don't rush it, wait for it... and sometimes you just have to wait on the animals, like in this pic. My overall philosophy is....Pictures are just opportunities waiting for you to stop and seize the moment. There is a whole world out there just waiting for you to photograph.
