Behind The Lens

Location

A ten day trip on the Royal Clipper brought us into the Caribbean Island waters off the shores of St. Kitts and St. Lucia.

Time

As the sun was setting around 6:00 -7:00 P.M., we bounced around in our boat's tender waiting until the Royal Clipper's sails were fully raised.

Lighting

As we only had about an hour to capture our images, we had to shoot continuously, hoping to capture that magical, golden moment when the sun's blazing rays would set fire to the sails, in magnificent illumination. At one point I was able to capture the sun directly behind the sails and winking between the yardarms. It's one of my favorite shots.

Equipment

I was using my first digital camera, a Kodak 6490 under tossing sea conditions. Back then, I was only shooting in 3 mega pixels, so I was lucky to have captured such good shots. I was continuously adjusting my stance and position attempting to keep the camera from too much motion.

Inspiration

When a clipper ship sets her sails, inspiration is a given. I was trying for dramatic lighting on her sails that would make this image exceptional. When I used these shots in a DVD movie, I chose dramatic and inspirational music as an accompaniment, allowing the swell of the music to give the photos drama and power.

Editing

I did practically nothing in post-processing other than minor tweaks in exposure. Occasionally I toyed with the color of the light in the sails.

In my camera bag

At present, I pack my Sony NEX 7 mirrorless camera with a Tamaron 18-200mm zoom lens and a monopod for stability and weight. I intend to purchase a macro lens to round out my equipment. As a senior citizen, I am concerned with weight and want the most diverse assemblage of equipment with the least weight.

Feedback

As a senior citizen who has mobility problems, I find that a zoom lens gives me the capability of wide angle and zoom without excessive weight. A camera with shutter and speed options gives me the capability of shooting for motion and/or depth of field. I strongly suggest that a fast lens and shutter speed is most helpful under similar circumstances.
