Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a little village in the northwest part of the italian Alps, at the foot of Mount MonteRosa.

Time

It was a windy day. It had snowed all the day before and in the morning; the wind blew the snoflakes all around. I was out without a tripod so I tried to hold the camera as stable as possible. It was afternoon, around 4 p.m, in a early spring day in 2010.

Lighting

In the afternoon I went for a walk around and while I was coming back home, I glanced up to the mountain in front of me and I saw the scene. The sunlight was spread by clouds like a big sofbox, the wind raised the snow from peaks, making a strong contrast and adding a dramatic feel to the scene.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D200 with a 28mm Ai-s without tripod.

Inspiration

When I saw how the light painted the scene, in particulary on the mountain and on houses, suddenly I said "Wow"remembering some images saw in some magazines. So I decided to take the photo because it reminded me some fantastic story scene.

Editing

Just a little adjustment to contrast and lights. A bit of crop and nothing else.

In my camera bag

I always go out with my Nikon D700, a Samyang 14mm wideangle lens, that it's a great lens aside from its distorsion ploblems, and Nikkor 105mm, a superb macro lens. Sometimes, if I'm out to take some wildlife photo I carry the Nikon 500mm and the 70-210mm f/4 with me. Also, I never go out without a light tripod, spare batteries, something to eat and a lot of water. Ah, yes, I bring also my Nikon D200... maybe I can do a timelapse :-)

Feedback

I always look for a good place where I can take a good photo. When you are in a mountain area it's important to remind that the weather can change quickly, so it's better to find a place where you can have a good composition and then waiting for the right lights or situation. This means you, maybe, have to come back to the same place several times!
