Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at a Bison ranch up the road from my house. I shot it a few years ago while I was doing some gardening work for the owners. I was told to leave early because thunderstorms were headed our way. Little did we know our area of Wisconsin would receive a record 100 year rainfall.

Time

Mid-afternoon, the interior of the barn was dark when the cat appeared in the broken window.

Lighting

Natural lighting ... camera was on auto mode.

Equipment

Olympus E-510 ... I'd have to close this and look it up on my computer.

Inspiration

I loved the texture and color of the old barn. I didn't notice the similarity between the cat and barn construction until I went back looking for a cat photo other my own home companions. The interesting thing that the barn is still square though the window frame is out of alignment.

Editing

I used OnOne PhotoSuite for post processing to bring out the coarseness in the local granite rocks. I added a texture overlay on to enhance the old wood and the crumbling mortar. Our town is famous for it's old granite quarry, U S Grant's Tomb was built of granite from Montello, Wisconsin.

In my camera bag

I alway carry a new Nikon D3200 with my old Yashica film lenses and converters. I also have three standard lenses up to 300mm for the Olympus E510. I just bought a couple of old Russian film lenses I'm using a lot on the E510. I love the painterly effects I get. I'm a bokeh lover, especially the the kind that comes from background movement.

Feedback

I'm just starting to get away from the auto mode on my cameras and learning to trust my creative muses. My don't trust my eyesight to focus so caring less about perfect and finding flow are more important. I have Andrew Wyeth's 'Christina World' in the back of mind a lot. She's forever reaching to the horizon. Finding my style is taking me far back to my childhood when I dreamed of becoming a commercial artist. My photography is getting looser, more painterly, a capsule of something that could have come from a sketchbook.
