Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Red Bank, NJ.

Time

Evening...actually at night.

Lighting

No special lighting was used. There is a street light directly behind me, off-frame, and the building lights were quite bright.

Equipment

Nikon D750, 20mm f/1.8. ISO 1250, 20mm at f/4.0. 7 exposure bracket and blended in post using LR Enfuse. Regular tweaking in LR 5, with Topaz Clarity added. B&W done with Topaz B&W Effects.

Inspiration

Driving by one evening I found this unique coffee shop all by itself on the block. The street lights gave the building a striking appearance, so I thought to take the image. People passing by stopped to see what and why I was capturing this image, but none asked me. I spent a total of about 20 minutes capturing 50 or so frames, mostly 5 and 7 frame exposure brackets.

Editing

Basic clean up in LR 5 (perspective correction, shadow/hightlights, sharpening, etc. B&W with Topaz B&W Effects. Additional clarity with Topaz Clarity.

In my camera bag

Camera, several lenses, cards, batteries, flash, tripod.

Feedback

Night shooting requires a fast lens (2.8 or better), and 24mm or better prime to get the best architectural view. I used the Nikon 20mm and shot very close (about 6 to 10 feet from the entrance). Normally, a tripod would be used, but I shot this image handheld. The Nikon 20mm prime is excellent for this type of photography.
