Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in Seattle's Kerry Park, a popular spot for capturing the city with the Space Needle front and center.
Time
The time of day was around 8 pm. Generally, I don't get out until my kids are in bed so I often miss golden hour and blue hour. Regardless, I always try to make the most of the conditions that I'm faced with.
Lighting
I wanted to capture the lights of the city with starburst effects on the brightest lights, so I close my aperture down to achieve that.
Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 5D Mark iii with the Canon 24-105 L lens on tripod with remote trigger to avoid camera shake. I shot in live view mode to lock up the mirror.
Inspiration
It was part of a project when I first got my 5D. I went around to several of the popular Seattle photography spots because I wanted those shots in my portfolio.
Editing
I did minimal post processing in Lightroom. I adjusted exposure and contrast a little but not much else.
In my camera bag
I normally have my Canon 5D Mark iii, Canon 24-105 L lens, Canon 70-200 lens, a remote trigger, Black Rapid strap, one of several tripods, extra batteries, a grip extender, Lexar pro CF cards, a 9-stop ND filter, and a circular polarizing filter.
Feedback
This is such a popular spot to photograph Seattle. It is beautiful in golden and blue light, and in the darkness of night. The most important thing about taking long exposure is avoiding camera shake. It was windy that night, so I stood between my camera and the wind holding my jacket open to protect it (and my images). Anything you can do to avoid movement of the camera is critical. Lock up the mirror (or shoot in live view mode), use a trigger or set a 2-second timer, and make sure your tripod is steady.
