Behind The Lens

Location

The image is from the deck of my cottage located on an island on Dogtooth Lake, in North-West Ontario. Being an amateur photograph for 45 years, this lake offers many challenges and opportunities for a hobby that is ever evolving.

Time

This is a series of 26 photos all taken at incremented shutter speeds (from 1/160 to 0.3sec at f16) using a tripod. The ice had previously left the lake only a couple of weeks before and it was the start of spring at 7:30 in the morning. There was no wind, however over the half hour it took take the photos, the clouds were slowly moving toward the camera.

Lighting

At the time I was new to HDR and was exploring the enhanced capabilities of this technique to increase the dynamic range of the processed image without exaggerating the effects. My camera had digital viewfinder that did allow me to get a good idea on range of the shutter settings to work with. The moving cloud effect was only evident to me after I started to work with the processing.

Equipment

The photographs were taken with a Sony DSC-R1 , using a Manfrotto tripod with a ball head.

Inspiration

This is my favorite view at the cottage. It is great for stargazing, storm watching. and is always changing with the seasons. Waking up some mornings the scene demands grabbing that camera with the coffee and getting to it.

Editing

With most of my HDR images I use Photomatix for the majority of the processing, fine tuning is usually completed inside Photoshop (PS4).

In my camera bag

Since creating this image I have changed to, a Sony A77 camera, with Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80, Sony 75-300mm, Tamron SP AF 60mm F/2 Macro, Rokinon 8mm Fisheye - lenses. I always carry a Gorilla camera stand, and spare batteries. Sometimes I will include a GPS, or Canon G11 if I'm in a city.

Feedback

Try to always carry a camera to take advantage of those moments where an once in a lifetime picture presents itself. Don't get stuck in a rut, try something new when things get routine.
