Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of Convict Lake in October 2013 during fall season in the Eastern Sierras. I was with a photo workshop led by Michael Frye.

Time

This was shot during sunrise. We were staying in Lee Vining, woke up around 5AM in the morning, drove for at least 20 minutes to get to this location. It was a freezing cold weather. We were little bit late on our timing so everyone in the group was trying to set up their tripods, trying to catch the beautiful light that is starting to light up the Lauren Mountain peak in the background.

Lighting

Since it was early in the morning, the lake surface was calm like a mirror reflecting Lauren Mountain. In minutes, sun started to light the peaks of the mountain and turned the grey mountain peaks to bright orange color, gave a mystical look to the scene.

Equipment

I shot this picture with Nikon d7100 body, 18-270mm Tamron lens and a tripod. Set my camera timer for the long exposure.

Inspiration

Being at a very remote place very early in the morning to catch the first lights of the sun is a very magical experience. Seeing the colors changing in front of your eyes with every second that passes by and knowing that this moment is only going to last for couple minutes, your immediate reaction is to capture and eternalize it forever.

Editing

For this image, in Lightroom I opened shadows and darken the highlights to bring a balance to the image. Since this was reflection, I made sure that the horizon line was in the middle of the frame. In addition, I increased the saturation a bit to pop the orange colors in the image.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Nikon d7100 body, 18-270mm Tamron all around zoom lens, 10-20 Tamron mm wide angle lens and my 70-200mm telephoto lens. Also, I have my polarizers, ND gratuity filters, my tripod, lens cleaning cloths and most important my back up cards.

Feedback

If you know that you are going for sunrise shoot, allow yourself enough time to set up, walk around to find the best composition in the location. When you rush into a scene, you always have a chance to make a mistake and miss the shot. Also, make sure that your camera has fresh batteries, new card, and clean lenses to use. Set up everything the night before; this way you will have a chance to have a cup of coffee in the morning instead of rushing.
