Beautiful shot! I love the muted tones and the way the clouds look like they are hand painted. Stunning! Welcome to Viewbug! I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Whitstable, Kent. I love photographing the coastal regions in England.

Time

I remember it was a sunny summer day and I was thinking to myself " This light will not cut it for any good image today. It is too harsh and flat". But then, about 3pm, the sky started changing and the light became terrific. Suddenly every floer, every boat on the shore was beautifully illuminated and full of depth.

Lighting

I love to use natural light for my images. Any nuance makes a huge difference in the mood, the message and the finished product might end not being what one had in mind when capturing the scene.

Equipment

The image was taken hand-held, using my Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 24-105mm F.4 Series L lens. It is a pretty versatile piece of glass that I always have in my bag for any occasion. And very affordable too within Canon the Series L range.

Inspiration

I had been watching people strolling along the shore and sitting on the beach the whole morning and suddenly all was quiet and lonely. The boat then became so present. It exuded calm but also loneliness, a tinge of sadness that really suited the light of the scene.

Editing

I always shoot in RAW and then process the images in Photoshop CC to correct levels and contrast. I also added a mood filter from Topaz ReStyle which I blended in soft light for it not to affect the overall tones.

In my camera bag

My Canon 5D Mark and a Sony A7 for back-up. I have recently discovered the mirrorless world in photography and I have to say, I'm impressed and excited about what's still to come. The dynamic range my Sony A7 offers is frankly amazing. Regarding lenses, as I mentioned, I love the Canon 24-105mm versatility, so it is always in my bag as is the new Canon 50mm f1.8. Nothing comes close to the crispness and vibrancy that a prime lense can capture -compared to zoom lenses- and this one is a) affordable b) incredibly sharp. I usually carry a Macro lense, as well, spare batteries and a little portable reflector.

Feedback

Don't give up on the light just because it is not right when you first to photograph your subject. Be patient. Fortunately, we live in an everchanging world with everchanging light!
