Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Arcadia, California at Santa Anita Race Track during the 2014 Breeders Cup races.

Time

The image was taken about 4:00 in the afternoon. It was shot just prior to the featured Breeders Cup race.

Lighting

The image was shot with purely ambient light. It seemed like the perfect time of day as the golden hour was fast approaching and having seen a couple other owners with their horses walk by, I felt that the light looked really nice since they were approaching from the east walking straight toward the setting sun.

Equipment

This image was shot handheld with a Canon 5D MarkII with a Canon 24-105L lens. I wanted to create a lot of depth of field so I shot this image in AV at f14 with an ISO 160.

Inspiration

Since I had a press pass, I could pretty much go anywhere around the track I wanted to. I happened to see this spot along the rail that was on a downhill slope. The position allowed me to be about 3 feet lower than the track itself and afforded me the ability to kind of create a "hero shot", of the two owners and the horse. I thought the composition complimented the days events really well from that vantage point.

Editing

When I downloaded the image to my computer, I couldn't help but think the image composition reminded me of movie poster. I decided to cater the post processing to that style. I played around with shadows and highlight slider until I got it as close to an HDR look as I felt looked acceptable, then I pushed up the sharpness, and lowered the overall saturation. Lastly I added a bit of blue and yellow for the overall toning of the image.

In my camera bag

I normally have a Canon 5D Mark II camera, a 70-200 lend, a 24-105, and an 85mm prime with me pretty much at all times. I also carry with me 3 Canon flashes, a Sekonic light meter, and various gels. Depending on what I'm doing on any given day I may add or subtract from that.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is when you're out shooting photojournalistic type of images is to put you camera in AV and just be ready to capture the moment. Keep you're head on a swivel and don't let a once in a lifetime moment pass because you were busy fiddling with the setting on your camera. Find an f stop that will allow you to shoot fast enough to capture the moment, and be ready.
