Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of my favorite places, the Spring Hill Botanical Garden. It was in the butterfly garden section.

Time

This was taken in the mid-afternoon. It was bright, warm and beautiful outside. As I was making my way around the garden, I couldn't help but notice the vast array of butterflies present, hopping from flower to flower. Taken in the early fall at 3:43pm.

Lighting

I always prefer natural lighting with a bright and sunny day. It really seems to make the pictures pop out. To me it always seems to be hit or miss when it comes to a flash outside.

Equipment

This picture was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel XTi and a 55-250mm Canon lens. Hand held without a tripod, just a steady hand.

Inspiration

My favorite thing to do with my beautiful wife is to go out each weekend and take pictures. You can never go wrong with a botanical garden, as there is always something new to see, no matter how many times you have been there. The butterflies were very active, with a lot of different varieties. With butterflies its takes patience and a quick trigger finger when they decide to sit still long enough to get a photo. I never knew what I had, until I got home and looked at my memory card.

Editing

This photo is untouched. Very rarely do I ever do any post-processing to my pictures.

In my camera bag

I usually only have 2 lenses with me each time I got out. First, an 18-55mm Canon. Secondly, a 55-250mm Canon. Third thing I have in the bag is a couple of different lens hoods. Next is a couple of 58mm UV filters. And last, a spare battery(charged of course)and a spare memory card, just in case.

Feedback

Getting a good photo is dependent on so many factors. Lighting, weather, temperature, location, time of the day, cooperative subjects. Always try to plan for as much unforeseen things you can think of. Take as many pictures as you can of the same subject. Changes settings, angles, flash/no flash, tripod, hand held. Try to think outside of the box. Put your own spin on your photos. And sometimes it just comes down to being in the right place, at the right time.
