Love the way it looks like a painting, and his eyes are amazing in this shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio (Literally a home studio...it's my small garage lol).

Time

It was mid evening. Luckily, you don't have to worry too much about sunlight when you have a "Studio", right!? :D

Lighting

Only one light source. A speedlight beauty dish with a sock modifier. It was the only off camera light modifier I owned, at the time.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D800e, with a 50mm f/1.8, no tripod, a speedlight beauty dish with a sock modifier, and a bounce card.

Inspiration

This was, actually, a candid moment of my father-in-law. My mother-in-law had just recently been diagnosed with stage 4 bone cancer, after being in remission from beating cancer previously, in her life, and she wanted portraits of herself before losing her hair from chemotherapy. This shot was in between poses, and as you can tell, he's not the most comfortable in front of a camera.

Editing

I replaced the background. Added a bleach-bypass filter, and added a touch more sharpening.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D800e, my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, Nikorr 50mm f/1.8, 3 speelights, triggers, Gary Fong lightsphere, shoulder strap, battery grip, and a ton of other small accessories.

Feedback

Beauty dishes are amazing for soft light. The closer the beauty dish is to your subject the softer the lighting is, of course in conjunction with the power of the speedlight. It's preferable to have a 45 degree angle with a bounce card to soften the shadows underneath the nose, eyes, and chin. I believe it's called a "clamshell" lighting system.
