Behind The Lens

Location

This was a late December sunrise captured across the fields in south Norfolk. It is the only time of the year that the sun rises behind these trees.

Time

Sunrise is around 08:00 in December in Norfolk, England.

Lighting

Always a bit of a lottery trying to capture images with the sun as the main component. Exposure settings altered for each shot.

Equipment

Canon EOS 550D with a fixed 50mm lens. Hand held but support taken from a wooden gate on the edge of the field.

Inspiration

The way the tress stand out against the sunrise is just quite stunning. I had been looking at the scene for a few days until I was happy with the sunrise and able to capture and obtain the result that does it justice.

Editing

I find it is always necessary to tweak images where the sun is involved. I generally shoot slightly under exposed so things tend to need bringing up slightly. If you over expose when taking the picture then you have lost the detail whereas if you underexpose it is there for you to enhance.

In my camera bag

The equipment I carry depends on where I am and what I am doing. Weight is a huge factor for me as I tend to walk great distances to capture images. Generally no tripod or monopod. Just a camera, a fixed 50mm, a wide angle 10-20mm, a small zoom and a 250mm zoom.

Feedback

Digital photography is great. Snap loads altering settings and exposures. The sweet spot of the particular lens may vary depending on the light. This time of day is always going to be awkward and only experimentation will help you eliminate such things as lens flare. However, saying that a nice bit of flare can look great.
