Location
This photograph was taken looking out from underneath and inside the Breidemurker Glacier Ice Cave in Iceland.Time
It was about 8.30am and we had just bounced our way to the entrance in monster 4 wheel drive jeeps.Lighting
Total natural light and amazing colour from the glacial ice.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D Mk iii with the 24-105 lens attached. I also mounted my camera onto my tripod because of needing a longer shutter speed. Our ice cave guide, Oscar, was the epitome of a model - he stood motionless for over ten minutes whilst everyone got their shots.Inspiration
The Ice Cave was a natural wonder and its vastness could not be conveyed without having a person in the shot to provide scale.Editing
I took 3 shots at 0, -1 and +1 exposures and blended them together because there was absolutely no way of getting the scene in one shot - there was too great a discrepancy between the inside of the ice cave and light coming in through the entrance. In my camera bag
I normally carry around my camera with my 24-105mm lens attached. Also in my bag I have a Lee Filter system with 3 ND grads (1,2 and 3 stops) plus a Big Stopper (10 stop). And of course, spare batteries, spare memory cards and the proverbial lens clothes.Feedback
It's a question of making sure you capture enough photographs to cover the full dynamic range. Make sure you check your histograms. Take your photographs in RAW format and then you'll have a much better chance of ending up with a really good product. Don't go mad with HDR - aim for a natural look.
